Timing Belt Service and Repairs Checklist
- Record the timing belt replacement date and vehicle mileage
- Inspect timing belt for cracks, fraying, glazing or excessive wear
- Check timing belt tension and alignment
- Replace timing belt at the manufacturer’s recommended interval
- Replace timing belt tensioner
- Inspect crankshaft and camshaft timing components
- Check variable valve timing components where fitted
- Set engine timing accurately after belt replacement
- Road test the vehicle where appropriate
- Replace idler pulleys where required
- Inspect and replace timing belt guide pulleys if worn
- Inspect the water pump and replace if driven by the timing belt
- Check camshaft and crankshaft seals for oil leaks
- Inspect for coolant contamination or leaks
- Check timing belt covers and mounting points
- Rotate the engine by hand to confirm correct timing and operation
- Check for abnormal noises after installation
- Start the engine and check for leaks and correct operation
- Clear fault codes and carry out diagnostic checks where required
